An open letter to Trek. YOU CAME SOOOO SO SO CLOSE to having the best touring bike in the world you AND SCREWED UP THE DETAILS. You nearly smashed your competition (can't name them here I think) but just when it came to the best details, you stopped short. Three questions before I tell you what you did wrong. First: You designed the super strong racks to hold a lot of weight correct? So this WAS designed for touring correct? So what touring? Super light day touring? Or by looking at it one could assume it's built to look and act like a serious touring bike to carry a summer load of gear. Soooo.......
If this is a touring bike built to be strong (as all indicators point to) why on earth would you put a 160 disc on the front? Why not a 180? I have had this bike fully loaded with 85kg of weight, and I am 85kg, and when going down hill, the 160 disc changed colors due to heat and nearly burned up my pads. When it was raining and I went down hill with a full load the 160 disc had me in FEAR that it would not stop when I needed it. I was SCARED and I don't scare easily. So I put the 180 disc on the front of the bike, and now it made a very big difference. What would putting a 180 disc on the bike have hurt you? It's better to have the braking power and not need it then to need it and not have it!
Next. Why why why would you put a 28 spoke wheel on a bike designed for heavy touring? If it's to save weight, that's a BAD way to look at this bike. 4 or 6 spokes in relation to a fully loaded bike is something no real touring biker would ever care about! I have talked to over a dozen friends and they all say, the 28 spoke wheel on this bike IS a BIG mistake. They can't believe Bontrager didn't put a 32 or 36 spoke wheel on this bike to show that the RIDER is more important than marketing insignificant weight savings from spokes. Trek/Bontrager has 32 spoke wheels on some of their Ebikes, so why not use those?
Lastly, the saddle is a joke. Why on earth would you have such a horrible saddle on this bike? It's built for LONG DAYS in the saddle and that typically means 8 hours or more. Well, I rode a 13 hour day in biking shorts with a pad and it took days to get rid of the soreness from the stock saddle. Please put a NEW softer saddle on this bike.
In closing I want to say I love the bike. It's great. It gets a lot of looks and there are many things I love about it, but I shouldn't have to replace major items to make it as strong as it already looks. So far I had to spend 700 Euro to get the items I mentioned up to the best quality and strength. So for now, there are SUReLY bikes that are better, that covered EVERY detail, and maybe next year if you fix these few issues, you will pass the others and have the king of the touring bikes finally. I wish you the best and can't wait to see if you listen to the voice of reason.
You were soooo close.
